Voice Analysis of COVID-19 Sounds

Pauline Mouawad from Lebanese American University, with Tammuz Dubnov from Zuzor.co, and CREL Director, Shlomo Dubnov, teamed to develop a new method for Robust Detection of COVID-19 in Cough Sounds Using Recurrence Dynamics and Variable Markov Model. This work, published in Springer Nature CS offers a set of features based on chaotic dynamics and nonlinear phenomena that exists in vocal signals.

Cultural Criticality

As a broad interdisciplinary project, Cultural Criticality explores Complex Systems theory as the basis for broad public understanding of culture, technology and its political-economic implications. Using theories of information theory, growth of networks, coalition game theory, and cultural aspects such as the role of noise in political-economy and scape goat theory, the project aims to provide an alternative foundations to understanding of the role of creativity, and ethics and aesthetics in AI and other emerging technologies. The project revives and reinvigorates discussions of Hayek, Marx, Freud, and other philosophical approaches to understanding culture and society.

Singing Voice Research Database

CREL Director, Shlomo Dubnov, and Visiting Researcher at University of California in San Diego, Computer Audition Lab, Liliya Tsirulnik, have teamed up to create the Singing Voice Database (SVDB) that may be used for research in singing voice expressions and in the development of a Singing Voice Synthesis System.

Cy Games and CREL Joint Research

In November 2017, Cygames Chief Technology Officer, Eitoshi Ashihara and director of Cygames Research, Prof. Shuichi Kurabayashi visited UC San Diego to establish a memorandum of understanding with Prof. Shlomo Dubnov, the director of CREL, and Prof. Ramesh Rao, the director of the Qualcomm Institute so as to establish a collaboration between CREL and Cygames Research. Embedded Electronics for Entertainment Lab

CREL in collaboration with Prof. Mauricio de Oliveira from the department of MAE and the COSMOS program of JSOE, has established a new lab for projects dealing with electronic circuits and embedded systems for entertainment applications. "The rise of the Internet, the Web, digital media and social networking environments introduces new methods for the creation of educational and cultural content," said the Center for Research in Entertainment and Learning (CREL) founding director Shlomo Dubnov, a professor in the UCSD Department of Music. "We are witnessing the emergence of new amateur practices and innovative designs in which multiple users collaborate, produce, annotate and re-use shared multimedia content." CREL will focus on grassroots creativity and learning while promoting research that combines artificial intelligence with interactive and participatory media to allow people to be more creative, informed and make better decisions in educational as well as entertainment environments.

XR-Lab: New Immersive Graphics and Sound Space

With the help of our industrial partners, Zuzor and Cygames, we established a novel interactive space with 270 degrees (3 walls) and floor projection, sensed by 3D cameras. The new facility allows rapid authoring and experimentation with extended reality contents without the need for VR wearable equipment.
